We know face masks are sold out everywhere due to world’s coronavirus outbreak. Many people will have to turn to other forms of home manufacturing as a last resort. To do this, it is necessary to know roughly what materials we could use to make the best face mask to protect against COVID-19.

Face Mask Patterns

Next, I leave you some patterns to make at home cotton fabric face masks. The outer edge of the face mask pattern is for cutting pieces of fabric. The inner template is to cut a filter that we can put in the face mask. Therefore cut 4 pieces (2 + 2) taking into account the right and wrong side of the fabric. Then, you sew along the curved edge two at a time. You sew elastics on each side. Now we are going to place a wire of the ones that come in the sliced bread that will serve to adjust the mask to the nose. Next, as a sandwich, sew the pieces resulting from the previous steps along all the edges, leaving a piece without sewing at the bottom where we will turn it and also where we will put the filter. Cut two pieces of fabric for the filter. In this case I recommend using the typical fabric of the reusable grocery store bags.

Material to make face masks at home

Statistics show that “DIY” or homemade masks are effective at catching viruses, but not with the same level of protection as surgical face masks would. But if we are forced to make our own mask, it is important to know what material is most suitable for making a face mask? As a curiosity we know that as the coronavirus spread through China, citizens started with home-made tissue paper muzzle covers, kitchen towels, cotton clothing fabrics, and even oranges! in the face of despair.

[adinserter block=”27″]

Our recommendation is to use a material with low permeability such as that used in reusable supermarket bags.

How to make DIY Surgical Mask

To make a surgical-style mask, you will need to cut a 22cm x 17.5cm rectangular piece. Next you will have to mark horizontal lines starting at the top edge to the measure of 3cm, 2.5cm, 2cm, 2.5cm, 2cm, 2.5cm and 3cm.

Now, we are going to make the typical folds of surgical masks. For this we are going to hide by folding in the rectangles measuring 2.5 x 22cm. You can download the

The fold should look something like this:

Next, we are going to cut two strips of elastic rubber about 18 cm long. We will sew them in a “U” shape turned to each side of the mask. (The best thing to understand is to see the video that I leave below)

Finally, we will use a wire from the ones that come in the sliced bread bags to serve as an adjuster on the nose. We will place it on the upper edge of the mask as centered as possible. Then, we will sew a hem with the wire inside. We will finish making the hem on the other three edges of the mask. And we will have our homemade mouth mask ready with materials that you can have at home.

Additional information and recommendations on the use of homemade face masks

[adinserter block=”27″]

From the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States, they provide us with several tutorials to make homemade mouthguards.

The CDC is recommending the use of cloth face masks in public settings where other measures of social distancing are difficult to maintain (eg, supermarkets and pharmacies). The CDC also advises the use of simple cloth masks to reduce the spread of the virus and to help people who may have the virus and do not know they transmit it to others.

[adinserter block=”28″]

In addition, cloth face shields should not be applied to children under 2 years of age, people who are having trouble breathing or who are unconscious, disabled or unable to remove the mask without assistance.
